Ohio lawmakers pass bill to save nukes

On Tuesday, members of the Ohio House of Representatives adopted amendments made to House Bill 6 by the state senate, referring the bill to Gov. Mike DeWine to sign into law. The bill, which has undergone tumultuous development, provides the roughly 2 GW of ailing nuclear generation with a $9/MWh subsidy beginning in April 2020 through the end of 2026. The bill also reduces future RPS requirements and provides OVEC’s two coal-fired generators with funding via a rate recovery mechanism through the end of 2030. Retaining 4.5 GW of baseload generation creates headwinds for future gas-fired generation, much of which is currently in development within Ohio.
