About Platts

Who is Platts?

Platts is a leading global provider of energy, petrochemicals, metals and agriculture information, and a premier source of benchmark price assessments for those commodity markets.

In 2011 Platts acquired Bentek Energy. Bentek was a recognized leader in natural gas, oil and NGL market fundamental analysis with expertise in power, demand and other energy segments. We collect and organize data from all of these markets from thousands of sources worldwide, and then transform the data into actionable intelligence and key market insights. Bentek provided a full range of products including daily market reports, online applications, comprehensive studies, consulting engagements and retainer services.

By combining the skills and experience of Bentek with Platts, we can now provide a deeper level of market data, news, and analysis to customers on a regional and global basis.

What sets Platts apart?

Our approach to energy market analysis is differentiated in three key dimensions:

  1. Data Driven Analysis – We develop our analysis and models based on the most detailed level of data available. For example, our analysis of natural gas flows and pipeline capacity utilization leverages our proprietary database of flows and capacity at all 26,000 receipt and delivery points across all U.S. interstate and Canadian natural gas pipelines going back to 2001 on a daily basis. We use this data to track gas production (receipts into the pipelines), storage, pipeline constraints and demand (deliveries from the pipelines). This unique resource gives us the ability to develop flow/capacity/pricing models based on solid facts, not theories.
  2. Transparent Methodology – Our approach and assumptions are open and completely visible to our clients. We develop our analysis based on the data described above plus many more data sources, all of which are available for your understanding of the details. Said another way, we do not ascribe to the ‘black box’ approach to energy modeling. We explain how we get to our answers, and can readily provide the detailed data and assumptions used to arrive at those answers
  3. Ongoing Market Assessment – We deal with the facts that can be known, and the projections that can be made based on those facts. But with any view into the future, there are always many unknowns. Our approach identifies those unknowns, and then provides a range of reports and services that track market developments on an ongoing basis.

What is the company’s history?

A business of McGraw Hill since 1953, Platts shares its parent company’s long-standing tradition of journalistic independence and integrity, and its steadfast commitment to providing the markets with the highest quality, timely and insightful information.

Platts has a long history in covering the global gas and power markets. It has steadily built on its reputation for providing respected price assessments, news, market commentary, and analysis.

As part of Platts’ ongoing commitment to provide the gas and power markets with the most relevant information possible, it has made a number of acquisitions to deepen coverage. This includes Bentek Energy in 2011.

Bentek was founded in 1985, primarily to provide consulting services to the energy industry. Bentek provided analytics and information services to a blue-chip customer base and is widely recognized as the industry leader in North American natural gas market fundamental analysis.

By combining the skills and experience of these companies, Platts provides a deeper level of market data, news, and analysis to customers on a regional and global basis.
