Peak summer gas demand from power in the U.S. may be lessening the storage surplus, but inventories remain near full and capacity limits will be tested this fall

BENTEK’s Natural Gas Storage Outlook reports the U.S. natural gas inventory surplus is currently at 645 Bcf, dropping 282 Bcf from the five-year high reached at the start of injection season. With the first real heat wave of the season sweeping across the U.S. this week, natural gas demand from power continues to climb, reducing the storage surplus.

The inventory surplus is expected to continue decreasing through the peak summer demand months of July and August, but the return of nuclear generation, coal stockpile limits and the need for baseload coal generation will challenge gas burn market share. BENTEK reports these summer demand levels cannot be sustained through the fall and will lead to sub-$2.00 prices as demand declines and storage inventories approach capacity.
