BENTEK’s U.S. Power Burn Report now includes a full page of data on market activity in the PJM Interconnection, where natural gas demand from power and gas-fired power generation are both up 47% year-to-date compared to 2011, rising 1.1 Bcf/d and 143 GWh, respectively. PJM is the largest U.S. regional transmission organization, operating a power grid that serves 13 northeastern states and the District of Columbia. Above-normal temperatures this summer have contributed to a 5% or 104-GWh increase in total power generation on the PJM grid compared to 2011.
Natural gas generation has been the main source of the additional power generation this year, capturing a 21% market share of the PJM stack. BENTEK estimates that by 2015 at least 3 GW of new gas-fired capacity in PJM will be online, potentially boosting regional gas demand for power generation by as much as 350 MMcf/d. Approximately 1.6 GW of coal-fired capacity is expected to be retired in PJM during this time. Utilization of existing and new gas-fired generation is likely to continue growing due to low gas prices.
To follow the PJM market in more detail, a section dedicated to this region is now included in BENTEK’s U.S. Power Burn Report, which provides a daily resource for gas demand in the power sector for every region of the U.S., including in-depth power burn analysis. This report provides year-on-year power burn demand comparisons, as well as 14-day regional demand forecasts.
New PJM Interconnection data now featured in BENTEK’s U.S. Power Burn Report:
• Natural gas consumption from power generation, including daily, monthly and year-to-date data
• Changes to the total PJM generation stack on a daily, monthly and year-to-date basis
• Historical comparisons of natural gas demand for power generation in the PJM
• Cost of generation comparison between coal and gas
• On-peak power prices for key power hubs in the PJM
